This lost a sense of urgency, being so divided between two plots (one much more frivolous than the other). So often I am just on the cusp of rating these books higher, but something doesn't quite work, like the pacing or the reveal, or the fact that the POV has a tendency to drift and the books are apparently not complete without the use of "artlessly" at least once. But generally I really do enjoy them.

I've now read quite a few Phyre Fisher books and each and everyone is a bit of a treat.

The absorption into 1920's society and culture that the author manages to accomplish in each book is quite stunning while still ensuring that each and every story is that little bit different.

This was a great addition to the series and I will continue to read on.

“This is it, thought Phryne, staring down the barrel. Now we will all die. What a pity. I haven’t done half the wicked things I wanted to do, and the ones I have done I haven’t done anything like enough.”

In this adventure, we investigate the murder of Miss Lavender for which Phryne goes to work undercover at the magazine she worked for. On top of that, Phryne has to deal with the disappearance and (as it turns out) kidnapping of her lover, and she will stop at nothing to save him.

I sometimes wonder if Phryne ever gets a decent rest in between cases. It is as if crimes follow her wherever she goes, or at least it always manages to find her. Oh well, at least ✨Jack✨ comes with it from time to time, so I’m not complaining.

This was a very enjoyable installment in the Phryne Fisher series, and I particularly loved the descriptions of the cottage with its sugary pink style and abundance of fairies. On to the next one!

“Like the Lord, Phryne moved in mysterious ways.”

Phyrne is asked to investigate the death of a author, a lady obsessed with fairies! I found this so much more interesting than the last one (I care very little about cricket). The peek into magazine/publishing was good, as was the information about pirates in the South China Sea.  Stephanie Daniels is as ever an excellent narrator!

Rather harsher than many of the others in the series, but very well-done and worth reading.

Melbourne.
