A good look at Guilliman during the great crusade, it’s great to see Roboute’s personal crisis develop as the novel goes on. Gage was brilliant in this, I would love to see more of him.

big fan of the way he was concerned about preserving the past culture of thoas. until he wasn't.

Real review of the Guilliman book - 3/5, but a good 3/5.

I debated on where exactly I wanted to start with the Warhammer books since there's.. a lot... and decided on the Horus Heresy: Primarchs books because I'm familiar enough with the general lore to understand but would like to further understand the characters like the Primarchs. So! This is what I went with! And honestly, I'm glad I did.

I found this to be a pretty solid introduction, honestly. I think the way the focus was divided between Guilliman and the Ultramarines was good, it worked well to showcase the dynamic of a Primarch and his sons. It gave me a good starting idea of who Guilliman is and how the Ultramarines are in action, which is great for going forward and reading more of the books! Again, I'm not nearly as familiar with Warhammer as other people are, so I thought reading about the fight between the Ultramarines and the Orks on Thoas was great, it gave me a great idea of what exactly happens in this universe as a whole.

Overall, I thought that this was a pretty solid start, both for a series about the Primarchs and as my own introduction to the 40k books.

I've only read 2 Primarch books so far and this didn't quite hit the same as Alpharius and Perturabo.

Positives: some of the best written orcs from the perspective of the space marines. Action packed and a lot of fun if you prefer action over substance

Negatives: I feel like after reading the Horus Heresy this didn't give me anything new about the Ultramarines

Forgettable, formulaic, stereotype characters, forced drama, some genuine character development, shoe-horned product placements in the form of specific unit types.

In short, if you want a good Annandale 30/40K story, look elsewhere. This is just a cash cow at this point. Hope he made good money filling a slot that BL had open. Any book about any primarch will sell to a now-captive audience.
