hiiii!!! this is my first ferrante novel!!!! it’s so exciting to be done with it and the fucking ENDING WAS INSANE!!!! watching two girls grow up and have the most quintessential close female friendship, specifically through the lens of a young girl coming of age and doubting her journey while her best friend seems to attract everything wonderful in the world, has been an absolute pleasure. in some weird ways, it heals a little part of you that’s done this and been here too. elena (the character) reminds every girl of themselves one day or another, and in the same breath, so does lina. a stellar novel that i can NOT wait to finish!!

The atmosphere of Naples was powerful, and the feeling of childhood wonder rang true throughout. There were moments at which I could not put this down. Though also moments at which I felt it dragging. The relationship between Lila and Elena is the highlight and focus of course. A beautiful friendship of jealousy, adoration and mutual understanding which stands the test of time. Will definitely be reading the next book in the quadrology!

Lila and Elena are growing up in a poor and often violent neighbourhood in Naples. Though the cleverer of the two, Lila's parents can't afford to continue to send her to school and so the two girls set out on different paths yet always remain close.

To be honest, I found the small town drama of this book boring. The relationship between the two girls was interesting but also what made the book frustrating for me. Lila is clearly the more intriguing of the two girls, with a bright, complex mind and a determination and bravery her friend only copies. Why are we always only told stories about girls like this from the point of view of their more boring and jealous friends? Why couldn't Elena Ferrante just have written a book from Lila's point of view? It would have been harder to write, of course, but I would hope more engaging.

The answer I suppose is that it's more about the friendship than it is about one girl or the other. But for me the friendship was only interesting at the start and the end, with a long boring bit in the middle about boys and feeling ugly.

Though the book ends on a cliff hanger I don't care enough about what happens to read the next book in the series. Maybe I'll read a Wikipedia article summarising it.
