Julia: A Novel

To be fair I last read "1984" in high school so my recollection of the source material is almost non-existent. But this take on the story was very boring. Idk if I get how it's a "feminist take" maybe it's me... Anyway... I thought about DNF multiple times but I kept thinking maybe it'll get better. But alas that was not the case

Ive never read Orwell’s version and I don’t have a desire to after reading this. I thought the writing was thoughtful and engaging with a good pace. I found the book overall pretty depressing, scary and sad. Unlike dystopian books written by  feminists such Octavia Butler, Ursula K Le Guin or Marge Piercy, this did not demonstrate ways that people and communities work together to overcome oppression. This was one woman trying to protect herself. I found Julia as a character fairly likable but very uninspiring.

Way preferred this to Orwell’s original. The ending felt akin to animal farms ending which is about as much as I can say without spoiling it.
The characters and story felt way more flushed out and had that real dystopian dread feeling.
If you’re a feminist and don’t want to read Orwell’s original bc he’s a bigot then this is absolutely worth a read

Good bits when overlapping with 1984's plot, but most of the "original" parts are noticibly weaker.
