While this book had a very slow start, I loved it once I got into it. The characters were wonderful, and the book had such a unique and refreshing air to it.

I absolutely loved this. Emily Tesh has now written one of my favorite science fiction books ("Some Desperate Glory") and one of my favorite fantasy books (this one).
I could go on and on about the wonderful characters, how they interact marvelously with one another, how engaging they are, and just how much fun they are to read.
I could go on about the school setting and the subtle jabs to that other book series that takes place in a magical school (I especially appreciated the line at the beginning about how it used to be graduates of magic schools knew magic and how to write their own name and that was it).
I could wax lyrically about the phenomenal Tesh described teaching, the mundane reality and challenges of teaching, the way students can make you want to strangle them one minute and make you cry tears of pride the next, and why, despite the horrible pay and lack of resources, people do it.
There's just so much about this book that I loved. As someone who works in academia, I've never read a book that got it as much as this one did. Seriously, I can't get over how good this was.
Your students forgot you. It was natural for them to forget you. You were a brief cameo in their lives, a walk-on character from the prologue. For every sentimental "my teacher changed my life" story you heard, there were dozens of "my teacher made me moderately bored a few times a week and then I got through the year and moved on with my life and never thought about them again." They forgot you. But you did not forget them.

“A more sensible scholomance” is what I heard someone describe this as and I really agree. Very similar vibes with demonic incursions and different levels of power. I really enjoyed the twist/reveal in the last few chapters.
More coherent thoughts may be added later on lol.
