This really hit a great balance between how a magic school might operate and how an actual school actually operates. Seeing all this from the perspective of a senior teacher within the system, rather than that of students, as is often the case in dark academia books, is really enlightening. Many times during this book, I found myself feeling nostalgic for my own years in sixth form.

The pacing was beautifully done, giving the world-building plenty of space to breathe and allowing the tension to build slowly until it all begins to go wrong.

This was quite a ride. The "mystery" element was a bit predictable, but still fun to read. I liked the characters and the growth they experienced. My favorite part of the book was the academic atmosphere and the description of the school. There are several classroom scenes that I thoroughly enjoyed. I love Emily Tesh's writing style and will continue to read her books.
