Proving true that the blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb, it portrays toxic, controlling blood family relationships and healthy chosen family. While the language is at times lovely (and a focus at least in part due to the professions/passions of the two main characters), the content doesn't feel like a proper match. The mythology is interesting but the romance falls short, making parts of the end especially unconvincing. I like all the characters, though I find myself wanting more from Attie so she wouldn't feel exclusively like a plot device. The pacing also felt really uneven; the set up felt too long and the middle felt too short (which, in my opinion, is where/why the romance falls short).

It just hit me that this is basically You've Got Mail with a different backdrop and I missed the montage of falling in love with the other person before finding out they're the anonymous pen pal. It made the "I wanted it to be you" moment feel unearned. To be fair, the book is structured a little differently here, but I also take issue with how that's handled because, in my opinion, it doesn't serve the romance favorably.

Surprised by how much I enjoyed this. Restored my old love in YA fantasy a bit!

damn im devastated

3.5 ⭐️ This was such a unique story and the anonymous letters had me grinning like a little girl! Not really sure how I feel about the ending, but obviously it’s set up to lead into the next book. There were parts I really enjoyed & other parts were slow to me. Will I read the next one, I’m not sure yet. Maybe one day because I want to know what happens next with that cliffhanger!

Absolutely loved this book and couldn’t put it down.
