This is a collection of stories by the brothers Grimm that are the ‘darker’ version of the fairytales from Disney.

I so badly wanted to enjoy these stories as I was really looking forward to discovering the initial inspiration for Disney movies and how they fluffed up their original dark origin- but I just didn’t! I spent most of the time reading these confused by the lack of plot and/or meaning to the stories, as well as not understanding the ways in which they were written (I will give some leeway on that one as it isn’t in its original language!)

Overall I just didn’t enjoy and wouldn’t re read these again- I’ll stick to the fluffy Disney movies!

November 2011 - Holy fuckballs. I checked this book out from the library, read it all the way through, and did not in any way recall having read it two years ago.

Is this what going mad feels like?

Okay, with the loving of this book!

I read some fairytales I know and love, and some I've never heard of. All of them were just different enough for me to truly enjoy them, especially since I'd never read the "original" versions before. Didn't know what actually happened to Cinderella's stepsisters at the end. The annotations were wonderfully fun, and gave insight into parts I might've skipped over without wondering about. Just a wonderful book!

The adult fairytales at the end were deeply disturbing, though. I understand why they were included, but ye gods.

Some of these tales are very strange. Some didn't make a whole lot of sense. We enjoyed this book but we're glad it's over.
