I'm not one for science-fiction but I saw this all over my bookstagram so I decided to give it a try and oh my goodness, what an absolutely delightful read. It was hilarious, heart-warming and edge-of-your-seat riveting all at the same time. If you're looking for a fast-paced yet emotional read, THIS IS IT. The ending was beautiful. Actually, it was all beautiful. Also, the audiobook was just spectacularly narrated. Chef's kiss all around! I rate it a 4 simply because there was a lot of science talk that sometimes my brain glossed over, but I still enjoyed how comprehensive yet accessible it was.

I found the main character a little grating in this book. He was a little childish and was not the most emotionally intelligent individual. The tone of this book is quite lighthearted, even when the topics are quite heavy. I prefer books to dive into the emotions of the situation  and this was definitely not what this book was going for. I probably just prefer a darker and more serious tone. I think this is about my preference and isn't a failing of the book. Some of the jokes did land and there would be periods where I would be having a good time. I particularly enjoyed the second act because there is a change in the dynamic, which I am not going to spoil. I think this is where the tone worked best.

I also kept thinking that there were all these important psychological and philosophical implications of the events, that we were just skimming past. The book is obviously meant to be a fun Sci-fi book and was never going do go into those topics but again I think that's more my cup of tea.

Overall, I thought the story was interesting and I can see why other people loved this. I did have a good time but it was patchy.

This was an incredible read. Really smart, intense, surprisingly funny at times. I was so enthralled with Ryland and Rocky’s mission, I felt like I was on the edge of my seat for the last 2/3 of the book.  Heavy on the science, but totally accessible and enjoyable.

Annoying protagonist gets in the way

I loved the story of Hail Mary. It's just as brilliant and well-conceived hard science fiction as The Martian. Unfortunately, Ryland Grace is so ebullient, he's like Mark Watney's hyperactive younger brother. He tries too hard to show us how clever he is. I was ready to give up until a new character came in 1/3 of the way into the book. That gave the audience more breathing room since Ryland could focus on the new character instead of just us, and helped me finish the otherwise satisfying story.

I initially hesitated to pick up this book because it was outside my usual genre. However, it exceeded my expectations. While there were some scientific concepts that required some extra effort for me to comprehend, the book was still captivating enough to keep me hooked throughout. The second part of the book took a surprising turn, which I didn't anticipate, but I loved Rocky and was pleased with the outcome. The ending was a bit bittersweet, but overall, I'm satisfied with how it all concluded. I highly recommend this amazing book to anyone looking for a great read.
