from now on, whenever i think of a devastatingly depressing book, this will be the one that comes to mind. 'the trouble with happiness' is a collection of short stories on marriage and family life, all extremely sad with even sadder hopeless endings.

i absolutely adore ditlevsen's writing and think that goldman did such a wonderful job translating the book while still being able to capture the beauty of the writing. my favorite stories were actually the first couple ones. they were the type of stories that, even though might have been a bit difficult for me to fully grasp the underlying meaning of, were still so moving and beautiful (in a sense) to read. these stories encapsulate loneliness and despair in their rawest forms, which might be depressing, but i believe is a worthwhile read for those who are open minded and know what they're getting into.

thank you fsg for sending me an arc to review! the book is out now for those who are interested in reading it!
