About the Book: Odessa only barely gets to taste freedom and adventures as dire news from home hurries her back to Karthia. Streets are burning with rioters protesting new, science based regime and lack of the risen dead. Plague is killing the citizens. Strange and dangerous foreign army is approaching homeland shores. And unease in the deadlands. All this is but a surface of troubles Master Necromancer Odessa will have to handle…

My Opinion: Odessa is an absolute badass. And now she has a pet dragon too! Story itself, while filled with action and drama, was at times lacking, but as I said many times: a well written character can ease a sea of pain. Master necromancer was up to the task to carry the reader through parts that seemed neither there nor here, with trouble brewing and mundane things happening that added nothing to the general fun.

It’s good. A 5 out of 5. Come on, a badass bisexual (yes, it is important to represent out loud, and not post factum) master necromancer, killing shades and commanding spirits, with a pet dragon at her side. What more do you want?

QUICK THOUGHTS:
• I enjoyed this sequel much more than the first! It seemed like it had more of a story that drew me in. This was fantastic as an audio.
• I like Odessa as a main character. I appreciated her down to earth attitude and how she carried herself.
• The LGBT element was definitely expanded on in this book, which made me super happy. Reading my review of the first, I was disappointed in this aspect, but this made up for it!
• I enjoyed how the characters had contemporary struggles in a fantasy world. By that I mean, relationship troubles, etc.
• Adrian’s comeback was interesting! I was like huh she brought him back but it was done in a way that made sense and the ending was just delightful!

This was just as magical, dark, romantic, and gripping as book 1. You guys will love it.

Edit: I'm Sarah's critique partner, so I've been lucky enough to read her books before publication. :)

Song of the dead is a great follow up to reign of the fallen. I like that we get to see some of the wider world, but also how it comes back round to dealing with the events of book one.

Valaria is probably my favourite, I find her such fun. And I love Odessa and Meredy, and the way the world is super queer, which I’d managed to forget.

I’m glad we went back to the issue of necromancy and how banishing the dead doesn’t solve the culture issues, and the fights against the church of change were fascinating.

I did want a little more on some of the politicking, but given Odessa isn’t really part of that, I can’t really object that it’s not a huge part of her storyline!

I really enjoyed reading this book which is the second novel in Sarah Glenn Marsh’s A Reign of the Fallen novel series. Odessa is a great protagonist in my opinion. She’s one who lives her life the best way that she can. What I like about her is that she loves who she loves regardless of whether they are male or female. I have never read a story with a character like this. At one point in this series she loved Evander and then fell in love with his sister Meredy after his death. As far as Song of the dead goes , I tried to figure out what that song was supposed to be. Was it someone singing it? Did the dead create a choir to belt out some tunes. However, once I learned what that meant I was pleasantly surprised.

This copy of the novel that I received from Penguin is 399 pages long. I was able to follow along without difficulty. Every character left an impression on me even down to the ones that were unable to speak. I felt bad for the spirits and those who fell during the battle. Without spoiling a major part of the story, I will say that there is a shocking part that I as always did not see coming. It’s something that I never realized could be possible.

I rated this book four stars out of five. I’m recommending it to readers who like a little fantasy, mythical creatures, magic and a battle or two.

I was so excited for this, but so disappointed. I didn't like the main couple in this this time like I did in the first book, and the couple that developed between Jax and another person was just not there. There was no chemistry that I could see. I was really sad because I had loved the first book so much, but this one was such a let down. There was too much happening, but at the same time, there was nothing happening at all. I was really looking forward to this one because the last one ended on such a cliff hanger. There was barely any plot, and it almost seemed like this was a first book with how little the characters were flushed out. The main couple argued and fought and broke up constantly, and I just didn't see a connection at all. the couple that developed was not flushed out at all and was just sort of happened. I did love Simeon and Danial though.
I did like some of the new characters that we got, as well as a dragon named Nipper, but that was really all.

The first book was so unique. The story was interesting and action packed and well written. There was a love story in it but it did not take over the narrative. I was so excited for this sequel.
However, this book was way more wrapped up in the potential love stories and it lost the beauty of the story. I loved that sexuality is not a focus of this story. People love who they love. I did not like how caught up in the past each of the characters were at different times.
I felt like I was slogging through hormone filled mud. I love you but my dead partner is the love of my life and I can’t leave them alone. It was not what I’d hoped for at all
