For MerMay, this is a creepy prequel novella for Mira Grant's Into the Drowning Deep. It almost feels like it should be read after Drowning Deep because it has the origin story. But I still enjoyed it and intend to read the next. I discovered after reading this that Mira Grant and Seanan McGuire are the same, and in retrospect that resonates. There's a creepy air about this book that feels very similar to Wayward Children.

Nothing like knowing everyone dies from page one and watching the dread build. The friend who gave me this was absolutely right that I would want to go on to the next book immediately afterwards. I've been devouring [a:Mira Grant|3153776|Mira Grant|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1380320279p2/3153776.jpg] books since I picked up this brilliant horrible book.

I love body horror and cosmic horror, so this was a blast to read! It's short, has a solid build up, and I like the open ending that leaves you a bit unsettled. Can't wait to dive Into The Drowning Deep next (all puns intended).
