Really enjoyed this book until the very end. It felt a little bit like one of the characters suddenly acted REALLY out of character, and it kind of pulled me out of it.

But, overall, fun world, and wonderful, cute characters.

Very fun! Can't wait to read the sequel

edit: i edited my review so it wasn't such a hot mess and took a star away. tl;dr i like the magic system and the side characters, but that's about it lol.

yikes what a disappointment. i mean, it’s not AWFUL, but it’s not that great either. there’s obviously a lot of problematic parts in this book, but those aside, i did like the side characters, the twists and turns, and i really, really liked the magic system. if you're like me and like more "fantasy lite," then this could be right up you're alley.

but...i didn’t really like how many times the author felt the need to squeeze a french word in every. other. sentence. as someone who doesn’t speak french, it made it really confusing and difficult to follow. also WOW. THE MALE NARRATOR IS BAD. SO BAD. i cringed every time reid’s chapter came up - i think this is actually the first audiobook i heard narrated (or partially narrated) by a man, and WOW was it hard to listen to, lol. why it wasn’t just narrated by the woman the whole time, idek. there were a lot of weird inconsistencies and character actions that just didn’t make sense. i also cringed @ the awful humor in this book - the jokes just didn’t land and came off as more annoying than funny. and i’ll just say it: this could have been a slower slow burn romance!! the transition from hate to love was kinda...mediocre? not that i hated it, but i felt unsatisfied?? if that makes any sense.

but i think the biggest problem i had was the lack of grey areas - both sides had bad things and good things about them. it might just be me, but i felt like there wasn't enough evidence shown that the witches could be good at all. even though lou is a witch, she stands up for them even though they're seen literally massacring innocent people, turning them into gross creatures or monsters. i don't see how lou could claim "you're killing innocent people" when the witches are doing the same thing, but like, a million times worse. it just made me super unsympathetic to the witches. but you know, i could be totally wrong in my interpretation and that's what you're SUPPOSED to think, but i really don't see that being the case when lou is a witch herself and hates the witch hunters who kill her kind. it is never questioned why witches kill innocent people in the first place and not just the hunters?? i'm just really confused about how we're supposed to view the witches, because honestly, even though lou is a witch she definitely doesn't "act" like one. she admits to a witch friend that she's basically a bad person because she kills and steals, but i don't see how a witch would view that as a bad thing?? like, wouldn't the witch be like "hell yeah, you did great!" lol.

maybe this will all be explained in the second book, but the things about the witches should have been explained here, imo. this could have had so much more nuance and drama, but it fell just below mediocre. i might rate it lower but as i said, the characters and magic system was really good. just about the only good thing, sadly.

This book was probably the biggest disappointment of 2019 for me.

I listened to the audiobook for the first 60% and read the last 40% in a hard copy I own.

Rating: 3.5

I totally understand why Maas blurbed it --- because the romance follows her pattern but it tastes like Walmart brand.

Things I liked:

THE MAGIC
Oh my god I LOVED the magic system SO MUCH. The 'dames blanches' and 'dame rouge' were such a cool, unique concept. The idea of 'patterns' with gold threads connecting pieces (ex. Lou breaking the lock vs breaking her finger)

LOU & COCO
I am always here to support my girl bestfriends. Their history and organic relationship was so refreshing. It reminded me of my own best friend and me.

THE IDEA
Witch marries a Witch Hunter? Hell yeah! Sign me up!!!

Things I Didn't Like:

THE PACING
The beginning was so. Damn. Slow. I was honestly about to start pulling teeth out. Absolutely nothing happened. At least nothing that I remember. There's about 200 pages that have been wiped from my mind and I most likely don't even matter do the overall storyline. And then, when something does happen it goes 0 to 60 in the last 100 pages and suddenly I'm stuck with this "wtf" ending and confused as hell.

THE CHEMISTRY
there was none. Absolutely none. And when it finally started to peak through, suddenly they're confessing love to each other and immediately split up. It feels like a cheap kindle book and not a bestseller.

TELLING NOT SHOWING
The big twist at the end was all revealed in one chapter by a character that's barely had more than 5 minutes of screen time. This part was bad on the editor's part. No one likes being told everything. As soon as Lou would have a "what if" thought, it would be immediately confirmed. There was no MYSTERY. no INTRIGUE. I didn't have to guess anything because it was immediately given to me!!!

Things I Hated:

"'But there's no such thing as a male witch.'" (Pg. 501)
You have just completely ignored and wiped out an entire population of people that identify as trans and nonbinary that MOST DEFINITELY do exist during the time period you have written for. Just because someone is born a "female" does not mean they identify as such.

I liked the premise of this book, but the author failed to convince me the characters even liked each other let alone fall in love. I tried to power through the second book but the lacklustre writing made me DNF

Y a mí me encantan éstos.
