This young woman can write and she builds stories that are unlike anything I have read and I am reader. Her characters in these I think its 8 short stories are all different. Each story and what happens is different. These are each very bizarre tales a slice of life for. Each woman main character in these short stories. The women are on the fringe and some of them have these successful sisters. All the women are oung and drifters or just on the fringe and rather disturbed. Yet they are also survivors. They live in different places in the US tho a few are in Florida where the author lives. A few are traveling or did travel in Europe. The common part of each story is that nothing is resolved and it is kept hanging dangling their lives and their issues.
there are very strange things that happen in most of these tales. those are to me surreal. Also most of these women are tring to clean up their lives. I think my favorite was Volcano House tale of 2 sisters. Also Hill of Hell.
I am impressed with the creativity of this writer and her gift for words...

I enjoyed this collection overall. The concept for each story was interesting but I found myself let down by almost every ending. I’d say my favorite of the stories was Your Second Wife. None of the stories were as spooky or speculative as I somewhat anticipated but they did mostly feel real and raw.
These stories were very, very well written but they're too short for anything to come of them. I'm a fan of the longer short stories, think Daddy by Emma Cline. Stories that I can sink my teeth into and rip apart the meat and bones. And I Hold a Wolf feels more like the broth supporting the meat and not the actual meat, there's such good buildup but the payoff lacks spectacularly. Especially in the shorter pieces.

A lovely short story collection of women grappling with ends, both emotional and existential, laced with equal parts horror and comedy. There were moments that spoke to me in particular in ‘your second wife’ and in ‘I hold a wolf by the ears’. Overall a very satisfying read one that touched upon moments every women in America has dealt with or felt and reacted with both despair and humor as it seems so many do.

I think I took the book claiming to have “ghost stories” too literally because it was definitely lacking in that regard. Still very well-written and interesting stories, but not super spooky if that’s what you’re expecting!
