Unfortunately, this book wasn’t what I expected. The thing about short stories, at least for me, is that there’s not enough substance regarding the plot. However, what I really appreciated was the writing and atmosphere the author weaves through the narrative.
The first half was strong but then it goes downhill. Still, I would read whatever she comes up next.

A friend of mine described this book as “desolate.” I cannot think of a better descriptor. LVDB’s writing is exceptional. The common thematic threads woven between these stories were timely, poignant, and well-executed. Even her nameless characters felt alive. These stories will stay with me for a long time.
