4 stars, a haunting and subtly disquieting story collection
What I love about this collection is the creeping horror, the pervasive dread that fills every story and makes them creepy in ways that are never explicit. Each story is like catching a glimpse of a shadow moving in a dark room at night: it's just enough to make you uneasy but not enough to be sure you ever really saw anything at all. That said, the weakness of this approach is that in a few stories it falls flat by being too subtle to the point that you can miss the horror of the story. I still think this approach succeeds far more often than not and I appreciate van den Berg's approach to horror.

One story blended into another in this collection.
Part of that was definitely that I listened to it on audio, but the narrative voice of all the stories had the same flat main character hold you the reader and others at a distance.

Read the first two stories during my lunch hour and felt that both were rather meh and unmemorable. Not inclined to continue further.
Not gonna lie, very weird imagining a former professor writing some of these things, but also hard to not be biased because she’s a wonderful woman. No surprise, her writing is entrancing. While no story was a let down, I wanted some of them to be a bit longer, to give me one extra little push. Also, the physical book was great: it’s so tiny and has these thing pages that were, for some reason, so satisfying to hold.
