The author sets a beautiful scene; I could picture the crumbling old English estate, could feel the sunshine and see the characters as they moved throughout the story.

The story itself? It held my interest in the beginning. The characters are well drawn and the dynamics between the three main players are tightly wound. I was drawn in and wanted to know what would happen, like any good literary mystery. But in the end? It fell totally flat.

This was difficult to get into as it jumped about timeline-wise so much. Once I got my bearings it was an interesting read. Knew something bad was going to happen just wasn't sure what.
The way, if things had been different" was very apparent for Frances and Victor. Peter and Cara (Cara in particular) seemed to be set on a course of self destruction, sad that they took Frances with them in a way.

Has similarities with The Haunting of Hill House, but set during a repressively hot summer. A woman severely damaged by her relationship with her mother embarks into adulthood for the first time, and entangles herself into the lives of a young couple.

It's been a while since I read this book but it was thrilling. Frances is a fascinating narrator, and while the pace of things happening in "real time" was pretty glacial, I found the way she described things very beautiful. I was actually drawn to this book by screenshots of some of the passages.

The prose style definitely suited Frances as a character, and I additionally liked the format that the story was told in...it was very atmospheric. This, I feel like, is real literature for adults, in which the reader's patience can be assumed and thus things simmer and stick around in the consciousness (contrast with Nettle and Bone by T. Kingfisher).
