4.5 ★s. i loved this book. the twist got me so good, i literally gasped out loud. like, truly did not see it coming. i think the author was so clever in how she built up the tension because when the twist finally hit, it was chef’s kiss perfection.
the pacing felt kinda slow at first, but now that i’ve finished, i see that was totally intentional. the fmc is such a horrible person that it was actually hard to read at times, but once i shifted my mindset to this is a slow-motion car crash, and i simply must watch, i could not put it down. there’s this weird, almost sublime horror to it—you know it’s gonna be bad, but you have to see how it plays out.
the only thing keeping this from being a full 5-star read is the ending. i mean, i get it, and it was satisfying, but for all that build-up, it felt too easy. like, it could have mirrored the slow horror of the rest of the book in a more perfect way. but even with that, it was still so well done.
if you like psychological thrillers that feel like a rich, dramatic mess with a mind-blowing twist, this one is for you. 10/10, highly recommend. i'm not sure i'm going to pick up the next book because this ending is soooooo satisfying and i don't want it ruined.

Сюжет достаточно прозрачен, сразу все ясно про Джексона. Дафна догадалась о мотивах Эмбер позже, чем я думала. Мне казалось, что она поняла все с самого начала и осознанно подыгрывала Эмбер. Первая часть от лица Эмбер была интересной, а вот дальше мне уже было скучновато. Финал мне понравился.

Honestly disappointed in the “villains” in this. One was pretty one dimensional and the other’s motivations conveniently changed to fit the story and the “revenge” at the end felt a little like a quick wrap up. Not sure this is one I would recommended to others. Although it was intriguing, I mostly got done feeling like it lacked the complexity I thought it might have.
