This is a deeply captivating book that examines what is family, justice, and identity, all wrapped in a wonderful fantasy world, rich characters, and a sweet romance.

As a former horse girl, this book got me good.

In all seriousness, this book was a delight to read, and I'm excited to keep reading this series.
It's only my second time reading a Goose Girl retelling, and it's vastly different from the first one I read, which is exciting in and of itself, because I love when retellings have distinct voices.

The found family element in this made my heart happy, and it also made me cry, and I am hoping the holster gang get more time over the next books because I love them

I couldn’t put the book down! I had been procrastinating reading this based on the number of pages, but once I started, I couldn’t stop. There were some confusing parts that I honestly still don’t quite get, but it all comes together in the end. The writing was beautiful and didn’t hold back from discussing some tough subjects like grief and justice. Some aspects of the world were very realistic for a fantasy book. I do think I need to process some of the events that happened, so I would recommend checking trigger/content warnings.
Falada’s death broke me
I would say that the later half of the book is a bit darker, so just keep that in mind.

A princess who would honestly rather be a goose girl, now that's intriguing. This story swept me up immediately and I felt so much anger on Alyrra's behalf. Valka? AWFUL. Alyrra's family? AWFUL. I knew where this story was going, but I had no idea how we would get there and that was very enjoyable.

For a YA book it is very refreshing to see no love interest, yes there is a prince but there is no romance toward him only platonic friendliness.
A slap in the face to all thoes who think romance is key to a novel. And it's been a day and a half since I read it and I can't get it out of my mind.
