I read as an audiobook. None of these characters were likable. I could have done without the fatphobia.

I really enjoyed the plot of this book, but couldn't get past all of the errors I found; things as small as punctuation and as big as getting the characters names mixed up (especially between the father/son duo or Jordan and Jake). This is a huge pet peeve of mine which resulted in the lower star ranking. I would suggest a better editor!!

However, as I said the storyline was intriguing and kept me entertained throughout the book.

"A warm June evening, a local tradition: the students of Nantucket High have gathered for a bonfire on the beach. But what begins as a graduation night celebration ends in tragedy after a horrible car crash leaves the driver of the car, Penny Alistair, dead, and her twin brother in a coma. The other passengers, Penny's boyfriend Jake and her friend Demeter, are physically unhurt - but the emotional damage is overwhelming, and questions linger about what happened before Penny took the wheel. As summer unfolds, startling truths are revealed about the survivors and their parents - secrets kept, promises broken, hearts betrayed. Elin Hilderbrand explores the power of community, family, and honesty, and proves that even from the ashes of sorrow, new love can still take flight.

I have read all Hilderbrand's books; however this one was more like Jodi Picoult's subject matter; very heavy and a bit morbid - troubled teens. Wish Elin would write about something other than Nantucket and venture out from this one setting for all her books. Not one of my favorites."

Elin Hilderbrand's latest book highlights the aftermath of a tragic teenage accident and how it rocks the small Island Community. Twins Hobby and Penny seem to have the world at there feet but that changes instantly when Penny is killed in a tragic accident where she was driving. The other two friends in the accident, Jake, Penny's boyfriend and outsider Demeter also struggle with trying to figure out and come to grips with what happened and Why. The parents also share the narrative in this inside look at life, love and tragedy.

This will not go down as one of my favorite EH books. While I enjoyed the story, it seemed a little choppy with so many narrators and none of them stood out( well maybe Demeter's). The big secret seemed to be downplayed in the end and wasn't much of a secret and I feel like the ending was a little short.

Overall, a good read- a solid 3- 3.5. Not as beachy or summery as many of EH's other books ( which is why it took me so long to read it. I started it and realized this was not what I wanted to be reading on the beach).

I thought I was picking a light fluff read for listening when I walk the dog. That's what I get for "judging a book by it's cover." Turns out it is about the people most affected by a 17 year old girl's death and they way they process it all. I did not appreciate AT ALL the two short teenage sexual encounters. Since I was listening, I couldn't do my normal skim. There is no need ever for adults to read graphic high school sex. Other than that, I enjoyed it. The reader did an incredible job.

My first by this author and I will likely read another. I liked the characters and their development and how the author kept the story unfolding through multiple points of view.

Summerland by Elin Hilderbrand
This book is about teens that after a graduation party on the beach take a ride and it changes their lives forever.
One is dead and one in a coma. Two others were not majorly hurt on the outside, but the inside is a different story. This is the tale of how they,
their friends and parents and the town continue to go on and their thoughts and feelings along the way.
One of them know what really happened and you have to read the book to find out if that secret is revealed. I love Elin's summery book covers and the subjects
she raises as they are everyday things that do happen to everybody in one way or another. The emotions are so varied and if you can talk about them it's a good thing to help the healing process...
