Realistically a 3.5, a great book but not up to the high standards I hold for Sanderson. Its a 4.5 star book if written by anyone else. A straightforward and fun premise with some great character development in the short time you have with them.
A grounded relatable protagonist, and a small but well realized world.

A great introduction into a sea of books from Brandon. The ending felt rushed, but I enjoyed how it was a story that wrapped up in one book.
This was so much fun!
This was my first Brandon Sanderson and I have to say, I really enjoyed his writing style. It put me in mind of T. Pratchett (in a good way) and just had a lot of humour and joy woven into the story.
I wasn't disappointed by the lack of world building because I think we got just enough to help carry us along on the adventure but this is definitely a snapshot of a place and a time without much depth. If there was a second book to explore more of the world and John's place in it, I think I would enjoy reading that as well.
Overall it's a silly adventure which lagged a little in the middle but I still found myself thinking about it and wanting to pick it up to continue reading -- I needed to know what was going to happen! Just don't go into it with massive expectations and you'll have a great time (especially since it is such a quick read, or it was for me at least). It does make me more inclined to pick up more books by Sanderson and I do have one on my shelf to read...
Maybe it's time to stop putting it off!
