This felt a bit slow at times but overall it was an enjoyable and entertaining read! The Cecil excerpts were hit or miss for me.
“A little pebble starts an avalanche. Life isn’t like the craps table, where the next roll has the same chance as winning as the next one. In real life, you lose a little—and that makes you wonder if you deserve to lose. You get nervous, make mistakes, overcompensate. So you lose some more. You’re behind, no matter how you scramble to stop it. You lose some more, then it compounds. Eventually, you’re so far gone… No one thing had ruined me. It had just…piled on.”
This might be one of my favorite books Sanderson has written. It has at least made it into my top five.
The pacing and story is a little slow at first. Somewheres around the 50% it went from a good book to a great book for me.
The themes of this book are amazing. There are a ton, and most of them are fleshed out by the end. Themes of who your true friends are, saving is stronger than killing, and everyone desverves a second chance. Everyone can choose to be better, though it might sometimes take the help of a God. Really really impactful character talks and moments in the latter half.
The charcters are pretty good. His side characters are by no means Sanderson’s best, but they get a ton of extra stars for being unique. That’s one thing I think Sanderson does really well with characters; really making them unique. Names like Alcatraz and Kaladin come to mind. And our protagonist here (and most of the side characters) are no exception.
The worldbuilding and prose are hysterical. This is a really awesome concept (that I don’t really want to spoiler, but trust me, it’s good) executed brilliantly. I’m always a sucker for amnesiacs (or white-room openings, as Sanderson calls it). Waking up in an unfamilar place, no memories, no clues or anything of why you’re here. Really fun stuff. Also this book is hilarious. 5/5 stars.
And, of course, the ending. This is easily some of the coolest stuff in the book. Full of moments taht had me whooping out loud (sorry family), and parts that had me grinning wide.
Also Kramer's voices are just *chef's kiss* here. Just...perfect.
Soo…. yeah. If you’re a fan of Sanderson, or even if you’re not, give this one a shot. Non-cosmere, so what’s in this book is all there is to this story. But it’s a really stinking good one.
9.3/10 stars. Highly recommended. Would read again.

3.5 So much fun! The last 100 pages or so was really fun and I love a good happy ending! Was definitely confused throughout the book as far as the actual conflict and plot lol as well as the science and magic system but I was still able to follow along and enjoy the book.
I also enjoyed the MC a lot. He was really well developed and I enjoyed that he had a difficult past and lacked confidence in himself but we saw him both utilize his abilities the best he can as well as grow and not let his past define him! There were some great meaningful moments throughout the book, definitely wasn’t just a silly action fantasy novel.

Another delightful read by Sanderson. This is one book that you will genuinely ruin for yourself if you read any spoilers before you read it for yourself.
