Okay so… this one was a weird ride. I went in expecting classic Sanderson; tight plot, cool magic, maybe a twist or two. but instead I got a kind of bizarre mash-up of sci-fi, and time travel that felt like it didn’t quite know what it wanted to be!!
The premise is fun in theory: a guy from a futuristic world ends up in a version of medieval England, with memory loss and a mysterious “frugal wizard’s guidebook” to help him out. It sounds chaotic in a good way, but it ended up just… being chaotic.
The humor felt forced half the time, like it was trying so hard to be quirky and clever, but I found myself eye-rolling more than laughing.
Also, compared to Sanderson’s other work, this felt thin. The worldbuilding wasn’t deep, the emotional beats didn’t land, and it just didn’t stick with me.
Not Brandon Sanderson worst, but definitely not his best.

The premise of the story was interesting, and the ride accompanied with it was enjoyable. However, I didn't feel fully settled into the world. We jumped around a little too much, and I was reeling at parts, confused and asking "What just happened?"
The comics at the bottom of the page were fun and adorable, but I feel like they distracted me from the main story. They were cute, so I would look at them, then read the words on the page (the ACTUAL story) and try to get my bearings again because I was distracted by the little images. So it would take me a minute to get back into the story after looking at the pictures.
I hate Ryan with my whole heart. What he did to John was horrible, and he is a terrible jerk. He says that John is judgmental? YOU JUDGED HIM RIGHT THERE. I think he just doesn't understand John. At all. Sure, they knew each other, but were they really friends? From what I could see, the answer was no. Ryan spent the whole interaction criticizing John. Every page he was on, he couldn't help but demean John, who is MISSING MEMORIES. Be a little gentler, will you?
I wouldn't necessarily say this is an epic fantasy, but it's also not really sci-fi. I usually use the term Sci-fa (science fantasy) to describe books that follow this type of novel.
A fun, humorous read if you're in need of a break from Sanderson's usual heavier books.
