This is how you introduce a conflict. This is a very readable overview of the creation of Germany and through the first world war. I have read a lot on this topic but I still gained a lot of insight into Bismark and Kaiser Wilhelm. This is not an in-depth study but a broad survey of the political sentiments that created or divided the German-speaking peoples.

Now go listen to Dan Carlin's Blueprint For Armageddon!

Excellent interpretation of an underappreciated part of German History. Brilliant insight without having to link towards the Third Reich. A political but inextricably social and personal history of people living life in the early days of a modern nation.

Not exactly groundbreaking history or narrative storytelling. Fairly conservative in its historiography, too. Fine if you’re new to the subject, but well-trodden and fairly superficial ground otherwise.
