entertaining, informative and easy to read

Kind of reads like a textbook at times, and there were sections with less detail than I would have liked, but overall a solid overview of the period. There were points where Hoyer repeated herself, but honestly I’d rather have everything explained as if I don’t have any contextual knowledge than assuming knowledge like so many other historians do.

I love how Hoyer switches between the historical narrative and the historiography. She does a great job of explaining previous historians arguments and analysis.

An examination of a period of history I knew nothing about. I liked it, and the book did a great job of making even the uninteresting stuff more engaging. I kind of wish it took a stronger stance on some of the more controversial events and figures, but absolute objectivity is admirable in itself I guess.

I'm a big fan of historian Katja Hoyer. This book is short (I finished it in less than 2 days) and well-written.
