★★★★☆ - This book was really great, I loved it!
On Darkling's Wings's September BOTM

If I have some advice for this book, it would be to read it in English. Don't read the translated versions because it sounds quite weird sometimes. I made the mistake to buy and read it in French and the translation was horrible. That's the reason why I don't give this book a 5-star review: at first, I didn't enjoy my reading. I found the writing style super weird and needed some time to adapt. Even now that I have finished the book, I still don't really like the way it was written.
I investigated a bit and found out the English version was well-written. So it's just my French translation.
Anyway, apart from these translation problems, the story was amazing. When I read the back cover, I knew I would like the story. Everything was way better than I imagined though. I especially enjoyed Minny's story (in my opinion, she was the best character).
I'm just a bit disappointed by the way the book ends. I wish we had a few more chapters.
However, even if it wasn't 100% perfect, I highly recommend this book. It was super great and one of the books I enjoyed the most in 2021!

I enjoyed this read in terms of writing, plotting, etc. But there are certainly some problematic elements. This is essentially a white savior story with an inauthentic look at the racial injustices of the time period. Each Black woman in this story is “the help,” and the only way their stories came to light was htrough the white main character. If you’re going to pick this one up, I would recommend doing so alongside books written by people of color.

This is not an enjoyable read. The author seems to have written the book to appease her guilt. Skeeter is obviously the author (you can tell this by the author note at the end) and she's not likeable. Skeeter's spiritual life is muddy. She doesn't like God, but starts praying to Him. I guess that's good, but does she become a Christian or not? By deciding to abandon her family to go to New York City, it doesn't seem likely. I understand this is not meant to be a Christian novel, but what did the author accomplish by making Skeeter an atheist, unless she herself is one. Skeeter's disrespectful view of God makes her unlikeable to me. Hilly, the villain, is stupid and a straw figure. Skeeter's deliberate manipulation of the newsletter and her act of hiring people to place toilets in Hilly's yard makes Skeeter even more unlikeable. Skeeter is mean-spirited, which takes away from her good intentions. Much of the book talks about the consequences of one maid putting doo doo in a "chocolate" pie and making Hilly eat two slices. This is unpleasant to read and think about. These are terrible people no one wants to spend time with. Skip this one.

What a beautiful, inspirational book. I listened to the audio version, which was exceptionally done. I felt the pain and the joy of the characters so deeply as if they were in the room. The characters were so intricately developed, which I am most picky about when it comes to reading of any kind. Definitely will read this one again.
