Definitely not Follett’s best. The characters are not well developed and the story feels flat and rushed. Follett returns to his familiar themes of religious conservatism versus liberal progress, but all the characters are forgettable. Sex scenes are frequent enough to seem like he’s desperate to keep the reader’s interest in an otherwise boring plot. It’s such a shame as Pillars of the Earth and its sequel and prequel are all GREAT books! This one just feels like a rush job to continue the story for publication just before the Christmas shopping season.
