There are certainly some antiquated parts of this collection that I would have preferred to see updated or simply ommited (ie the racist language in some of the stories), but overall a very interesting take on the detective story.

It’s Chesterton, so I feel like I should be giving this book a higher review than I am, but his fiction turned out to be a slog for me. The stories were just too formulaic and the characters were too flat. I will stick with his prose.

A collection of short detective stories. Generally pretty good. Centered on understanding motivation, rather than observing details. Never invite Father Brown to a dinner party unless you want someone murdered.

Could there be a book more enjoyable to read. I don't think so. Short mystery stories are my comfort food of books, and Chesterton is brilliant and philosophical and funny and you know. Chesterton. And reading things set in London and Oxford after going there ... hits different.

A collection of short stories about Father Brown, an affable priest with a knack for mysteries. Although The mysteries themselves were more or less predictable (with a couple of exceptions), there were character developments in the first four stories that took me completely by surprise, which is a major asset. Another major asset is the use of language and the slightly ironic tone the writer employs, with a subtle sense of humour even under tragic circumstances.

Detectiveverhaaltjes met een diepere laag. Mooie psychologische tekening en licht spirituele toets

Detective stories with a deeper layer. Normally, detectives are not my thing, but in this case Chesterton offers striking psychological drawing and a light spiritual touch, that often surprises. I think I'm going to read more of this author.
