Would've been better without the ghosts and curses. It's an interesting topic already so I don't think it needed this spiritual element.

Very well-told insight into an appalling time and way of thinking.
Switching perspectives between the sisters also made it a quick read.

I'll get right to it. Magnolia took me out of the whole story. To go from being raised a white belle in 1950s deep south by arguably the most racist person in the city to mixed and being cool with it right away? No thought of what will happen, really, no real missing of her "old" life? I call a bit of bs. I'm not saying the book needed 10 more chapters but maybe she found out the summer before and had tried passing first? Charlie coming is her sign to be who she really is.

Also, while there is talk and a bit of supernatural, I really excepted more of it and a bit more of a horror or terror element. I've read plenty of YA that was true horror.

Love the social commentary, but hated one of the MC's and the lack of horror.
