“Because every time I accept that I'm worth less - less than a man, or a white person, or a gosh-darn oil baron - it punches a hole in my spirit. Punch enough holes and your spirit breaks.”

My favorites for the year seem to come up in December!
This was an amazing historical ghost story played out in the 50s South. The plot stayed spooky while also expertly touching on the history of the segregated South and how fast many held on to that believe despite change on the horizon. There were many parts in the book where I felt like this would be an excellent and successful movie--the ghosts and hauntings were so good!
Accurately, the story's conflict is not easily solved, and the mindsets of the protagonists are challenged and grown throughout. We even see change among some secondary characters.
There's a bit of romance, but it doesn't take over the novel, which I appreciated. And as someone also "white-passing", I felt seen in many parts of this book.

I will be thinking about this book for a long time. Mirror Girls is a great companion to The Vanishing Half. Twins born in the Jim Crow era to a white, plantation owner’s son and a black woman whose ancestors were slaves on the plantation. One twin born black, the other lighter and is raised passing.

I enjoyed seeing their history come forward, the ghost story and haunting, and the battle with feelings of despair when you feel that what you do doesn’t matter. This is a must read and a powerful book. Kelly is a talented writer and I look forward to reading more books by her.

A really interesting story taking place in the Deep South during the civil rights era. The star of this book is the surprising relationship between the two protagonists-twin sisters separated at birth, one white, one black. I won’t give anymore away because that is what compelled me to turn the pages. The ghosts/spirits of the southern town are interesting enough, but this is a family relationship story for sure.

Entertaining listen. Be warned - some gruesome, racist violence takes place on these pages.

4.25, rounded down.

I enjoyed this genre-blending YA novel with a Southern gothic feel. It blends together historical fiction with paranormal, with a dash of horror.

I appreciated the topics and themes incorporated, which included "passing," racial inequality, civil rights, sisterhood, generational curses, and more.

I particularly liked the paranormal aspects of the book, from curses and mirrors to ghosts and conjure. As far as the characters, I loved Charlie, but Magnolia, less so, though I can appreciate her character arc and development.

I am a huge fan of this one! I adored the magical aspects of the very real issues of the 1950s during the beginning of the Civil Rights Movement. It also had a haunted gothic vibe, which I also love.
