This was such a haunting tale. I love a twin reuniting and to see two starkly different women share so much love for each other had me crying happy tears for their potential future together.
Also, tell me the conjure man scene with the twins doesn’t give Naveen and the voodoo man vibes….

I finished this book much faster than expected, especially since it is not in my typical reading wheelhouse. This Historical Fiction book was a book I picked at Barnes and Noble as a Blind-Date-With-A-Book for having supernatural elements and being a Southern Gothic tale. Needless to say, this book did not disappoint.
The story had many heartwarming moments and was very fast paced. It could have taken a little more time for character development and to give the book a deeper and more satisfying ending. The plot felt rushed in places, but overall I would read something like this again.

Mirror Girls

3/5 ⭐️
Mirror Girls is set in 1953 Georgia and narrated by twins Charlie and Magnolia. Charlie and Magnolia were separated at birth after the lynching of their parents for an interracial relationship. Charlie and Magnolia do not know each other and have lived very different lives. Charlie Yates grew up in New York and now is a young Black activist. Magnolia Heathwood lives on a cotton plantation in rural Georgia passing as a white woman.
When both grandmothers pass, the girls come face to face with each and their family’s history. Their family secrets will haunt them and continue to cast a deadly curse unless they can reunite as sisters. Charlie and Magnolia are complete opposites, but they need each other to put these family ghosts to rest.
I read this book for the March Book Bestie Book Club pick. This book caught my eye simply with the lettering and beautiful cover. Also, the synopsis was very interesting and unique. It has similar vibes to the Vanishing Half by Brit Bennett. The symbolism and topics of this book are deep, but I felt like it did not live up to its potential. Characters lacked genuine emotion in descriptions and the internal conflict dialogue was inadequate in my opinion. For the fullness of this book, I felt that it fell flat in the end. Also, I have said it before and I will say it again… the supernatural element is not for me.
