My boyfriend picked this book up randomly for me because he thought from the synopsis that I would enjoy it. I honestly don’t know if this is considered middle grade or young adults I think I remember being young adult but I honestly kind of read more middle grade to me.
The story itself was really easy to pick up on, the pages and font made it really easy to fly through the book, I read like 150 pages in one sitting without even looking up. The story of self was very captivating it was interesting and different from like anything I’ve read. I thought they introduce the world very simply and world has magical aspects but it was pretty casually introduced.
I really liked both Charlie and Magnolia I feel like there was a lot of character development between both of them, especially Magnolia. However I do feel like it was kind of fast, I feel like story was in fast forward the whole time and it’s just like if I just found out everything they did, I don’t know I just don’t know how realistic it felt to me.
It’s definitely not scary or thriller but it does have that little spooky magical theme in it so I feel like it would make a perfect fall read.
With all that being said yes the story was interesting and it was very easy to follow but it’s just like wasn’t holding my interest enough I literally fell asleep like 3 times while trying to finish this book.

I think this book had a great concept behind it, however, I’m not very fond with the execution of it. I feel like it was a story that could have had some very interesting/ complex plot lines but each plot point felt a little predictable and like it was written to just make the reader happy. I love Charlie and think her character held true but many of the other characters seemed to change their individualism at a whim
This was an outline of what could have been a really awesome book. It should have been measured and atmospheric with a Southern Gothic feel. Why did we need to rush through it? (Clean)

I really enjoyed reading this book as the sisters fight against segregation. However, with that being said. I don’t find this book considered as “horror.” Ghosts, yes. Particularly scary, no. I also didn’t find it believable for Magnolia to quickly accept her identity as being half-black. I think this book moved quite fast and I wish they slowed it down a bit and delved deeper into the history of Heathwood since it played such a significant role for both the curse and the colored spirits. Overall, I liked the book but the ending and some other parts of the book weren’t satisfying to me.
