It was an easy quick read, spooky vibes, definitely YA with emotionally heavy themes (slavery, Jim Crow, protests, etc.) Overall it was pretty good
slow-paced
It wasn’t bad, it was just middle of the road of a mystery.

Loved the premise
Audio narrator voices were rough
Wish this went deeper, felt like it didn't have a full plot or depth to the curse

Really enjoyable read. Super atmospheric. It was perfect for an October spooky read. I loved the short chapters. The layers of the story were complex even though the story was fairly simple and I appreciated that. It had a lot to say underneath all of the ambiance. Highly recommended for a classroom library. Grades 7 and up.

I didn't think it was that scary, I would say more spiritual than horror
Book Club Review…Mirror Girls by Kelly McWilliams
This was a wonderful historical fiction story about twin girls Charlie Yates and Magnolia Heathwood who were separated after their parents died for loving across the color line and haveno idea the other exists. Magnolia was raised in Eureka Georgia, and is the white heiress to a cotton plantation in rural Georgia. Charlie was raised in Harlem with her Nana, her darker skin unmistakable. When Charlie's grandmother falls ill and they return to Eureka Georgia for her death. When the girls do meet Magnolia discovers her reflection has disappeared. They couldn’t be more different, but they will need each other to put the hauntings of the past to rest, to break the mirrors’ deadly curse and to discover the meaning of sisterhood in a racially divided land.
The story is both haunting and beautiful at the same time. It's about race and segregation and it's also about standing up for what's right and yourself, family and love. Seeing the girls come together and create that sisterly bond was a wonderful experience. You can easily feel the emotions of the characters! The writing is wonderful and the pace was steady and moved well with the events! The magical realism with the curse and the ghosts added an interesting twist to the story.
The book offered many different topics to discuss as a group creating a lively discussion! The time period, the girls as individuals, their different upbringings and when they came together, the decision to separate them and not tell them about each other and much more!
Thank you The Book Club Cookbook for another wonderful #galleymatch
