3.5 stars. Overall I enjoyed this book, but I felt that the story was very rushed. I was also able to predict the big reveal at the end almost right away. I really did enjoy the supernatural elements that were included in this one

lots of well-executed metaphors, messages on identity, and historical connections. i enjoyed the use of magical realism (i think that's what it's called? a real world story with some magic/paranormal elements) to tell the story of the evils of slavery and its lingering impacts into the jim crow 1950s. however, the main characters were somewhat one dimensional and side characters were underdeveloped. some interesting elements were roped in just to be ignored for most of the story. i liked this book and it was definitely impactful, but the writing wasn't my favorite.
