This is not a romance. This has a lot of sex, but there is no romance established in this book. I’m not saying you won’t enjoy it, but I thought there would be romance and there wasn’t.

I was more interested in the mystery and manhunt parts of the story than I was anything about the characters.

The MC wasn’t like able or even interesting. He was a hot mess from beginning to end, and despite the author and the character telling us that he was good at his job, everything in the actual story contradicted that, because he was reckless and incompetent in everything he did, and more often than not would have been unable to do anything—including avoid death—if Zane hadn’t been with him.
Sias didn’t have a lot of page time, but most of it was taken up being manipulative and condescending toward the MC. Although his characterization at the start of the book versus the end of the book made him feel almost like a completely different character, which was off putting.
Zane was the only sympathetic character in the entire book. Like yes, he was a closed off asshole. But his frustration with his circumstances and being saddled with a reckless idiot that caused him to get injured multiple times in the span of the story was very relatable.

Technically, this book felt like it needed more/better editing because there were not only multiple typos, but some strange and jarring word choices and phrasing used like “maliciously polished black marble” floor.

At this point, I don’t know if I’ll continue with the series due to the issues I had with this book. I guess I’ll just have to wait and see.
