Patrick Wolfe was right when he said settler colonialism is a structure not an event.

I picked up the book straight after watching the movie and I can definitely say I enjoy the book more, which is not a slight to Martin Scorsese. My reading experience was greatly influenced by the movie as well - making comparison to how the story and its characters were portrayed.

David Grann is a true journalist. He wastes no time in telling the truth and laying bare how sinister white society can be in a style that is so beautiful.

While it’s true the shift to the FBI does not compare to Mollie Burkhart’s story, I was quite captured by Tom White. Though Mollie, like the film, no doubt is the beating heart of this story, White’s story was enrapturing. Following White’s story from his youth to his days as a cowboy lawman to when he becomes the FBI’s crowning jewel before slowly being lost to time was poetic.

And much like the film, I have a lot of complex feeling about this book that I struggle to articulate. Every time I come up with a thought about this book, I find myself countering it. Was I acutely aware that the person telling this story is a non-Osage person? Yes. But I was also acutely aware that I am not an Osage person. What layers of this truth is Grann missing? What am I missing?

This is an incredible story about how greed of white immigrants caused the deaths of so many Osage people. It’s a disgusting honestly but a very necessary read. There is so much hidden in American history and I am thankful that this story came to light. My only criticism was in the structure. The 2nd section, to me, could have just been a separate book. Trying to integrate the founding of the FBI into this didn’t work for me. So I gave it 4 stars.

The behavior of these men is truly disgusting. I was happy to see that Wikipedia has them characterized as serial killers. That’s exactly what it was.

Really interesting investigation of a part of American history I had never heard about. Well-researched. So many names it was sometimes difficult to track. Eye-opening to the blatant injustice and racism directed toward Native Americans 100 years ago. If you don’t know about the oil that made many Osage wealthy, check into it!

I went into reading this book thinking I'd not find this book interesting and probably be bored since its advertised as the creation of the FBI. But this was such a pleasant surprise. While it does discuss thoroughly the creation of the FBI, it also thoroughly takes you on the journey of murders that occurred in the Osage County. It was mainly a book trying to figure out the murderer and then follows the court case. I would say only about 20-30% of the book was about the FBI creation. I definitely recommend this book for anyone interested in murder crimes. Don't be turned away by the mention of the FBI. Also, this will be a movie starring Leonardo Dicaprio and Robert Deniro in 2022, directed by Martin Scorsese, so don't sleep on this book! It's bound to be an award winning movie just like the book.
