Keeps you up at night. Terrifying and very real. The story is horrific and never gets out of the tense and dramatic . Fine writing and great plot development. Lacking a bit of character development, but that is hardly the point. I really like how the authors make no excuses for the perpetrator and also none for the society that reared them.

WHY DID NOBODY TELL ME TO READ THIS SOONER?!

This crime fiction read was so good! It was dark, gritty, suspenseful, and kept me guessing! I loved the multiple points-of-view and short chapters; I flew through the 500+ pages in like 1 day.

I loved how the story progressed and wrapped up at the end (while also leaving some unanswered questions for the next book in the series). Of note, this is the first book I’ve read in Joona Linna series, and I didn’t feel lost. So you can definitely read it as a stand-alone.

If you’re looking for a great Nordic noir, crime fiction book, then definitely check this one out!

Now, excuse me while I buy every other book in this series......

CW: graphic depictions of murder and sexual assault, kidnapping, physical abuse, graphic language, suicide and suicidal ideation, medical provider misconduct

4.5 stars. enjoyed it and already getting others in the series

how did i forget about joona? i think i assumed this wasn't translated yet. this series is my favorite. so fast paced and INTENSE! didn't love the investigating-from-the-inside angle but man jurek is a scary villain. can't wait to read the next.

Add Lars Kepler to the list of prominent Scandinavian crime authors.

Creepy and well-plotted, especially in the climactic sections and throughout the portions of the undercover cop locked inside the psych ward, The Sandman gallops along, brutal and tense as it lives up to the well-known form of Scandinavian mysteries.

What’s unique about The Sandman is that the cops know who the murderer is - and he’s already locked up. But Jurek is no less dangerous, operating with a previously unknown accomplice, and for the police to find the missing victim, they need to unravel the why behind the series of killings.

There’s something a bit extra spooky about the killer being so dangerous that even isolate in prison he’s a barely diminished threat. But there’s much more potential the story of Jurek and his (somewhat obvious) accomplice than The Sandman allowed for. That story tumbled out as a bit of an afterthought, when perhaps it could’ve been built in throughout.

But on the whole, it brings the blood-soaked desperation that’s satisfying to fans of the genre.

THE SANDMAN by @larskepler is the 4th installment of the Joona Linna series and I have to agree with #bookstagram, the stores get better as the series progresses.
Once again it is a race against time as Linna frantically tries to save the life of a child taken years before by someone whose sole purpose is to seek revenge and destroy the lives of the people, including Joona’s, he feels wronged him.

This installment sheds more light on Linna’s past and readers are finally getting a more complete picture of the complex and troubled Detective Inspector.

Couldn't Stop Reading

This book was intense! The creep factor and tension the author was able to evoke was apparent on just about every page. Been a while since I've read something that disturbed me so much I had to put down even during the day. Whoa, what a read!
