I grabbed this as an ARC and kept putting off reading the book because I saw it was #4 in a series....I ended up reading this without reading the books that came before in the series and it was fine.
Sadly I read this a couple months ago...and some how forgot to review it, but basically a story of a serial killer in prison who continues to kill and terrorize victims....and the detective (plus underling) that tracks down the cause and victims and figures out what is happening. He had kidnapped two siblings and one managed to escape (7(??) years later) while the other one was close to death if not found....
This was a good read and a bit of a page turner....though I figured out what was going on before the detective, I still enjoyed it and will grab other Kepler books should I happen upon them.
Read if you enjoy some nordic noir...

Okay, I need to get something off my chest. This book is the epitome of "everyone should listen to Joona Linna, ffs"!!!
I've read all books in the series and no one believes Joona and then everything goes to s*** and Joona has to fix it. Like, why don't you learn, people? :D
Apart from that, I think this book is the weakest one of all. There were some things happening super illogically, which was irritating for me. Otherwise I enjoyed the back story of Jurek Walter, it was needed in the series. Mind that I didn't read the books in order, but it was pretty easy to connect the dots while reading, so I really loved that about the series. And Sandmannen was the perfect piece to finish the whole picture. As I said, the only drawback was some illogical details, like when Jurek is shown like an almost supernatural being.
Hopefully, I'll find other Nordic noir series to fill the void that finishing this one brought. :D

The books in the Joona Linna series for me are quite long and detailed, they're what some people might call slow burners. Whilst this is not usually what I look for in books, I seem to really enjoy this format in this series, I'm not sure why, whether it's the love for the stories, the characters, the atmosphere or the authors writing I don't know but I love going into these books.
Unfortunately THE SANDMAN was one of those typical, slow burning books that I hate. It was dragged out for way too long and because it was based on a killer that they kind of already have captured it got boring quickly. In my own opinion I think this book was at least 200 pages too long, the start is interesting, in the middle it falls flat then you find out the twist and all you really need to know from there is how it ends.
"It wasn't the people who were buried who were being punished, but those left behind."
I find that once you spend a major amount of time with the bad guy of the book, they start to become less scary and less interesting. This story wasn't as gripping as the others in the series and I was left feeling very disappointed.
I still can not fault Lars Kepler's writing and the atmosphere these books give off, I have a lot of space in my heart for these books and I'm looking forward to moving on to the next in the series, STALKER.
