I would have given this at least four stars, but it was difficult to get past that it was so poorly written. I have read a few of Danielle Steel's books, but had never noticed the repetitiveness, nor the editing being this poor.

I'm not normally into love stories, but I did like the story line of three fragile people who had been hurt by previous spouses and that they met new people. I could definitely understand the fascination with the diaries written by the "ghost." I was kind of hoping that the owner of the bed and breakfast was at least the great- or great-great-granddaughter of the ghost. Her character could have been more highly developed.

A concept that could have been five stars, unfortunately became for me a struggle between two or three stars. I chose three just to be nice.

Not one of my favorites of hers. Charlie was too pathetic with his constant issues with Carole. His voyeurism via journals was too weird for me. I understand loving a book but it made Charlie seem more needy and unstable. I loved Sarah's story though! That is what redeemed this book for me. She could have just written the S&F story as a book and it would have been great.

I was given this book by a family friend after admitting that I had recently read my first Danielle Steel novel and enjoyed her writing. She suggested it because it was a book she had enjoyed. I still have the copy, and another that I bought after the first got worn from re-reading.

The story was, and still is, a favourite...it's inspirational, it's original and well written. I love the romance, the unexpected parts, the parts where I cried my eyes out, every time I read it, no matter how long it had been. In the beginning, when I first got it, I would read it, start to finished, cover to cover, and then start all over again straight away. That's how good this is.

"With a wife he loves and an exciting London-based career, architect Charles Waterston's life seems in perfect balance. Nothing in his comfortable existence prepares him for the sudden end to his ten-year marriage—or his unwanted transfer to his firm's New York office. With nothing left to lose, Charlie takes a leave of absence from his job to drive through New England, hoping to make peace with himself." (From Amazon)

Originally when I read Danielle Steel novels I would have rated them 3-4 STARS, but now I would classify them as 1-2 STARS. These are great for those who like mild sex, unrealistic dramatic romances and grand plots.

Long chapters. Slow to start it was page 100 something before we even meet “the ghost”. I did enjoy reading the historical parts of the story. The present day parts were predictable and repetitive.
