I liked this more than Emergency Contact, but I think this is the last book I'll read from this author. Her writing is just not for me. Super slow until the ending and her characters are just never likeable for me. Jayne is frustrating on so many levels. My relationship with my older sisters is clearly different but I still appreciate that the book was about a sister dynamic that isn't sunshine and rainbows.

I LOVE the way Choi creates such vivid characters, and at times this felt like a memoir rather than total fiction. The emotions of each character, Jayne especially, are so real, raw, and motivated by their personalities & histories. The reason I didn’t give this book a higher star rating was because, while I thoroughly enjoyed reading it, I do not see myself coming back to it & it‘s not something that will stick with me in the long term. Would recommend giving this a read though!

I felt the need to hug my sister after finishing this book (I didn’t but I should lol). This book portrays what a sister relationship is like so so well, the ugly and beauty of it :) Because of that, this book made me ugly cry.

I also felt very seen as the younger sister lol.

“This story might be emotionally expensive for you”

That kinda says it all, doesn’t it? What a beautiful, honest piece of writing. There is a delicate balance between loving these character and hating them, and we walk it closely, but that is what makes them come alive. The realities of family and childhood trauma and what we become, and how we carry it with us even when we run far away. The reality of living in world (country) where treating illness is a luxury. It takes a bit to get into it and, admittedly, I put it down for a few days at one point but I’m so glad I picked it back up. I love this with my whole heart.
