it has been a while since i bawl my eyes off reading a book. the first chapter got me frowning, unable to imagine how hard to live under terror and carry a big burden to heal injured people (which lots of them ended up dying). i didn't expect the plot would be so tense and excruciatingly painful. i loved how the writing also emphasized hope despite of the condition. i love love love this book!

I have family that are Syrian who had to leave due to the war and revolution and while I knew briefly of the situation, this book gave me a much better view point of what’s happening over there. This book is not only about the trauma and horrors Salama and Kenan witnessed, but hope. This book was devastating and so beautiful and I could not put it down. It broke my heart, but also taught me so much about hope. I cannot recommend this book enough and I could not put it down.

someday i'll be able to form coherent thoughts about this book, the emotions it made me feel, and the tears i shed as i tore through it in less than a day. i wish i could give it a million stars because just five are not enough. i feel like a different person after reading this, and i will never forget this beautiful story, salama, kenan, and their courage.
