Little Women

Louisa May Alcott

4.1 AVERAGE

Did not finish at 64%. I try my hardest to finish a book once I start it, but the second half of this novel tried my patience.

The first half was cute! I liked the little vignettes and didn’t mind the didactic nature. Meg hastily marrying Brooke seemingly out of spite and opposition towards Aunt March? That’s when things started to sour for me.

Early on I found out Alcott didn’t like this novel much at all, and tired of writing “moral pap for the young”. Even knowing that, I still enjoyed the first half of the novel.

I don’t think reading it as an adult is making me dislike it more. I’m currently reading the Anne of Green Gables series which is also a children’s classic and contains didactic monents, yet I find that series completely delightful.

I’m glad I didn’t read this book as a child, because I know I would’ve tossed it aside and wrote it off without even making it to part two!!

woah.

At times charming and cozy, but also often moralizing in a way that tried my patience even with the knowledge of it being a product of its time.

You can never make me believe that Amy and Laurie are meant to be.

Is this book going to be one of my favourite books of all time? Probably.

I don't have enough nuance to properly review this book so let me just say that it is such a heartwarming read and also a great gateway into reading classics. I'm not a big reader of classics myself but I found myself falling deeply in love with this story and this book and I think that's going to help me when going into classics in the future.
