It's like The Ring meets murder mystery meets CSI. I enjoyed it. Disturbing, fascinating, well written.

I loved the characters, and the translation was very good, which probably means the writing is very good. The actual mystery was the tiniest bit disappointing in the end, but I think that was more my problem than the book's. I would read more of this series if it became available in English.
dark mysterious tense medium-paced

Thriller/police procedural.

Inspector Frank Sharko is a profiler for the French police who takes medication to keep his schizophrenia at bay. He's called into to investigate the death of 5 men whose eyes are cut out.

Meanwhile, a film buff experiences spontaneous blindness after viewing a film from the 1950s and asks an old friend, a detective named Lucie, to help him figure out what happened.

Lucie and Sharko end up uncovering cutting-edge science from the past, mixed with violence going back many decades across geographies like Rwanda, Egypt and Canada, and possibly with government approval.

Surprisingly good. The only bad thing I can say is the cliffhanger at the end is horrible, especially since the next book hasn't been translated into English yet.

This French psychological thriller focuses on a sinister film and its horrifying history. Definitely not for the squeamish! My complete review is here: http://decalino.com/2015/06/10/review-syndrome-e-by-franck-thilliez/
