I loved this book!! Looking back, it's a bit... foreboding... a fox family being hunted to death.... but I remember liking their clothes....

I read this to my students. They enjoyed it. I think the advantage Roald Dahl has with kids is that he's a bit inappropriate and mischievous. I wasn't allowed to read [b:The Witches|6327|The Witches|Roald Dahl|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1351707720l/6327._SY75_.jpg|105046] as a child, and I remember being convinced my father was making up things in [b:James and the Giant Peach|6689|James and the Giant Peach|Roald Dahl|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1320412586l/6689._SX50_.jpg|2379261]. This helped these books to feel a bit audacious and thrilling. So many kids books are mind numbingly dull (*cough* Magic Tree House *cough*). Children need books that are a bit more wild and subversive. This isn't a great example of that, but still has aspects of it especially when compared to more of the bland garbage they are read. There's hunters, and foxes, and inappropriate jokes about the the hunters' appearances, and shooting, and more shooting, and drunk rats. It's a moderately good time, which I can't really say about Magic Tree House

This review was mostly about Magic Tree House and was almost certainly unfair to it. Sorry, Magic Tree House

I found this book to be entertaining, but it was missing some heart. I find that my favorite children's books have this quality about them. That being said, this was a very simple story, reminiscent to a story from Aesop's Fables. I would read this to my kids one day just for the entertainment aspect of it. I am excited to read more Roald Dahl!
