TLDR: Audiobook - Millie Bobby Brown reads a book out loud instead of narrating it properly. The writer needed an editor/critique group. I still listened and enjoyed the story/retelling. It was a lovely retelling of a true life experience, that does sit with you afterward.

The Long Version: There are awkward and distracting mistakes that an editor/critique group should have picked up on and had the writer correct. These are also so minor it might be nitpicking for no reason, it was just distracting. Distracting enough I bothered to post this.

The parents, Charlie and Em, are referred to by their names instead of mother/mum/father/dad. [Spoiler] After Nellie's father dies, she "later found a scarf of Charlie's that still smelled of him." Her father or dad used instead of Charlie in the sentence is preferred. Nellie never refers to them directly by their first names in speech instead of Mum and Dad, so it's really distracting and awkward to hear.

The word choice American characters use are British in places. Example: Americans wouldn't use "Sorry for your losses." We would use loss, even if it's multiples.

Lastly, while I love Millie Bobbie Brown, and it's nice to hear her read 'her' book, it's just that...reading a book out loud. She isn't properly narrating fiction. Maybe she doesn't listen to fictional audiobooks to know better. But this isn't it. Maybe Rebecca Soler, Jot Davies, and Wil Wheaton, et al, have spoiled us.

Fun fact: There are quite a lot of photos of WW2 era photos of events on Morpeth Street, and in Bethnal Green, and within the tube shelter on the internet. Mostly through Getty Photos. Have a browse, worth the effort. Especially the huge street party for the Queen's coronation after the war on Morpeth Street.

While it may not be the best writing ever it really is a very moving and emotional story. Some parts are hard to read as you feel so much of the pain of the characters.

Predictable. Seemed a bit contrived.
