This is the third book in the Duncan Kincaid & Gemma James series. In this book, a young man dies in a way very similar to his wife’s brother. The family has secrets and they seem to be hindering the investigation, so it is up to Duncan and Gemma to figure out what is going on and how it is impacting today. Themes of love, regret, denial and betrayal are woven into the mystery. In this book, we also see a progression in Duncan and Gemma’s relationship and partnership. I enjoyed both the mystery and the development in the main characters here. Good, solid mystery read.

I've read first 2 books and jumped to I’ve read the first 2 books and jumped to later books in series and now I’m catching back up from the beginning. I mostly enjoyed reading about Duncan and Gemma’s emotional struggles and growth.

Book 3 of this series and I can tell the author is finding her groove - my favorite so far, a better mystery and I’m enjoying the two main characters more.

There's always room for a cozy mystery, and Deborah Crombie's two detectives, Kincaid and James, are a great pair. This novels ups their relationship a notch, so much so I had to start Book 4 just to see where it started (I will pick it up later).

My only disappointment with this book is that it didn't have more about opera. The scenes with James listening to the operatic singing were some of my favorites.

Leave the Grave Green by Deborah Crombie is a 2010 Scribner publication. (Originally published in 1996)

This third installment in the Gemma and Kincaid series, is centered around the alleged drowning of Conner Swann, whose death may have been a tragic accident… but because the death is suspicious, and because Connor’s in-laws are influential, Kincaid has been assigned the case.

Kincaid immediately finds himself drawn to Connor’s widow, Julia, an artist, and struggles to maintain his professionalism, and Gemma is mortified to discover she is jealous. Meanwhile, the detectives unearth some rather unsavory facts about the victim, while pondering a similar ‘accident’ involving Julia’s brother, many years prior.

This is a terrific chapter in this series, and since I goofed and read book four ahead of this one, I had to go back to see what might have led up to some big changes in Gemma and Kincaid’s personal relationship.

I’m glad I decided to backtrack because this story delves deeply into Kincaid’s psyche, while presenting a very puzzling and absorbing whodunit.

I now understand how things evolved between the two detectives and can now move on to book five with a little more peace of mind.

This is an excellent British mystery series and I am enjoying reading through it!
