The number of times she says, "What do you mean?" .... Gets pretty annoying.

This book had such potential but the writing was sadly lacking. The main character is flat and has no experiences of her own. Most of the book is other people explaining things to her. It gets tiring after a while. Instead, she should have observed some of those things through her own experiences. I mean, she regularly sneaks out at night for a secret group meeting and no one ever gets caught. Being "leashed" is introduced as a brutal punishment but is mostly just an afterthought after that.

I think this could have been really good as a trilogy with the whole first book at the academy and she goes from red coat to disgraced student, learning lessons and finding things out more slowly.

I think this is a well written book, it just wasn't necessarily the sort of story I want to read currently. I enjoyed some aspects of it but I didn't like the way the story ended. I am largely reading to unwind and relax so maybe its just that this book didn't suit my current reading goals more than anything inherently wrong with it.
