I adored this. And I hated it. And I adored it. And I loved it.

That was GOOD. I read this because I had gotten an arc for Kara McDowell’s upcoming novel, the Prince and the Apocalypse. I loved that so much that I just had to read all of the author’s other works, so this is my second five star book from McDowell.

This book is a retelling of the movie “While You Were Sleeping,” a 90s rom com starring Sandra Bullock. Gemma saves Beau from drowning, but then he falls into a coma. Sometime in the aftermath of this, everyone believes that Gemma is Beau’s girlfriend, even though she isn’t. Her social anxiety doesn’t allow her to clear up this misconception and she just has to go with it. Everyone believes this lie, including Beau’s older brother, Griffin… All while Beau is sleeping, she spends a lot of time with Griff, initially as friends, until they slowly begin to fall for each other. But just before anything can happen, Beau wakes up. And then you’ll have to read the rest to see…

The only thing that would make this title more accurate is if it was THIS WILL DEFINITELY BE AWKWARD. But I loved it! So so great, entertaining, heart wrenching, and swoony.

Where do I start?
This book was fabulous. It was cringey when it needed to be, and done so well. It was fun, swoony, and cute, and even had some serious parts about social anxiety and depression. I thought it did a great job tackling the more serious issues without brining the book down to a dark or sad level. It was so easy to read, every time I sat down to read it, I would plow through a huge chunk. It was a delightful story that gave me second hand embarrassment, had me cringing, laughing, and smiling so hard. More people need to be reading books by this author because they're so wonderful

I loved the book honestly. The only reason why I didn’t give it 5 stars is cause it came off a lil too childish for my liking(it was too much to stomach)!

Started off cringey and rocky but I actually really grew to enjoy the main characters quickly. I honestly appreciated that Gemma addressed her social anxiety quickly and did her best to overcome it. At the start I was very much expecting her to just be painfully awkward the entire time. But she and Griff had some amazing banter.
