Alison is freaking dumb. Where is Alison's woman instinct?
Great plot twists, turns all around. How the story ended, what ACTUALLY happened, all the little cracks that started to show because of the main event were genius!
A pity, they needed a better writer.
This was my second shot at McGowan’s work and yeap, she’s not for me, her writing is BORING with absolutely 0 suspense it even feels like a crime that her books are labelled as suspense thrillers.
Not touching a thriller in a while tbh

Book Review: What You Did by Claire McGowan

A good read that I wanted (I wanted - nice change from last book) to find out the ending. Started out with the crime, so unraveling right from the get go. A lot of unlikeable characters but you still want to figure it out! Good twist.
I enjoyed this book. It was fast paced & a quick read. It reminds me a bit of Liane Moriarty, if she wrote thrillers. Most of the characters are screwed up & not very likable. So avoid this book if you aren’t a fan of unlikable “protagonists.” The main character Ali makes some stupid choices & can be annoying but I also recognize that she’s been put in some impossible situations so I was a little more forgiving.
4 stars, I would check out this author again.

Talk about a whirlwind of a story! As much as I normally don't usually go for books where a majority of the characters are unlikable, learning about everyone's backstory really helps with understanding how they got to their unlikability over time (or why they never bothered to change). The friend group the book is focused on is ABSOLUTELY toxic and the author does a good job of making that clear from beginning to end. Even the bouncing back between present-day and their college years was done well (also something I'm not usually a fan of in books) and was incorporated seamlessly for the plot. Trigger warning though, with a story heavily revolved around rape, there was a fair amount of unsupportiveness coming from the female leads. However, I do like that the author makes it a point to highlight the fact that, unfortunately, a high percentage of rape is committed by someone the person knows. I got sucked in right away and highly recommend it for anyone that's looking for twists and turns with a satisfying (and shocking) conclusion.
I got this as my Kindle FirstRead for July. I love a good psychological thriller, but I'm not sure this book classifies as one.
That's not to say I didn't enjoy it. The premise is really interesting and you do wonder if the husband is the one who really committed the crime. So it kept me turning the pages, but it felt like more of a murder mystery/crime thriller for me.
My issues? It felt like there were a lot of subplots that felt disjointed and didn't go anywhere and didn't relate to the main plot, at all. Leaving me with a lot of unanswered questions. For example...
**SPOILERS**
What was the point of Jake stabbing Mike? It felt like it was just to put Mike into a coma and take him out of the story so we'd never hear his side. What happened at the end? How did Mike and Ali's relationship change now that she knows he repeatedly cheated on her and he fathered his mistress' son? What happened with Karen and Jake? I also didn't see the connection between Martha Rasby's murder and Karen's rape, but maybe I missed something there.
**End Spoilers**
I also couldn't relate to any of the characters and they just seemed like archetypes...the goody-two-shoes, the guy with a big secret, the drunk, the promiscuous girl, the good guy. Ending also came out of nowhere and there was no buildup to it.
While I liked the book enough to finish it, I didn't love it and it ultimately fell flat for me.

Bit of a weird story but I didn't dislike it. Not the most amazing thing I've ever read but I was pretty hooked on it.
Well I didn’t see that coming.
This book was a struggle for me to connect with at first. The characters didn’t intrigue me and the first few chapters felt slow, like hard work. Once the story got going I enjoyed the twists and turns of the storyline.
