Overdramatic and very in-your-face small town setting
Maybe I'm being harsh because this was a 5 star prediction that I was so hyped about, but I just never felt connected to this book. Young's writing has beautiful moments but overall I didn't find it as magical or atmospheric as many reviews described it. The story is interesting but feels very drawn out and the characters were fine but felt a little hollow at times. I'd definitely be open to reading more from Adrienne Young in the future but this book just felt a bit lacking to me.
3.7 stars
Spells for Forgetting by Adrienne Young was an engaging read, but it did leave me with mixed feelings. The multiple POVs were interesting but ultimately became confusing, especially when it came to distinguishing the elder townspeople. They felt a bit indistinct, and by the end, I was left puzzling over who was involved in the ultimate plot against August. Side note: I literally thought “Saorse” was a character for a hot minute!
The title leans into a fantasy fiction vibe, but the book itself feels more like a mystery-thriller with magical realism playing a supporting role. While I loved the innocence of the romance, I’m struggling to categorize this as an adult novel. The YA books I’m reading right now have more spice!
The portrayal of small-town dynamics with everyone being passive-aggressive and up in each other’s business, was spot-on, adding a layer of tension to the mystery. While the plot is definitely the focus, I still enjoyed the ride and felt the twist was well-delivered.
Despite its shortcomings in character development and categorization, the book kept me hooked and entertained throughout. I would recommend for fans of small-town mysteries with a hint of magical realism. Just be prepared for a bit of confusion regarding the characters.

Before I read this, I was about to slide into a reading slump. This book started as a story I somewhat enjoyed and then turned into something I really fell in love with. I have a soft spot for ancient magic and the community that treasures it. I want to keep this review spoiler free so I can’t dive into all the things I loved but any book that makes me this excited to keep reading is something special to me.

An enjoyable read but the ending kind of sucked. I wanted more of a wrap up.
